zkSync Era is a ZK rollup — a Layer 2 network that uses zero-knowledge proofs to scale Ethereum transactions while inheriting Ethereum's security. It's one of the leading ZK rollup implementations alongside Polygon zkEVM and StarkNet.
What is a ZK Rollup?
Rollups process transactions off-chain (on Layer 2) and periodically submit a compressed batch to Ethereum (Layer 1). This reduces the per-transaction cost of Ethereum security dramatically.
The difference between rollup types is how they prove the batch is valid:
Optimistic rollups (Arbitrum, Optimism, Base): assume batches are valid by default. Anyone can challenge a batch by submitting a fraud proof within a challenge window (~7 days). If no challenge, it's finalized. This creates a ~7-day withdrawal delay to L1.
ZK rollups (zkSync Era, Polygon zkEVM, StarkNet): generate a cryptographic proof (ZK-SNARK or ZK-STARK) that the batch is valid. The proof is verified on Ethereum immediately. No challenge period — withdrawals finalize in hours, not days.
zkSync's EVM Compatibility
zkSync Era is EVM-compatible at the bytecode level. Most Solidity smart contracts can be deployed with minimal changes. This differentiates it from StarkNet, which uses a different language (Cairo) and requires full rewrites.
The zkEVM (zero-knowledge EVM) compiles Ethereum smart contracts into circuits that can be proven via ZK-SNARKs — a technically challenging engineering achievement that took years to ship.
How zkSync Era Works
- Users submit transactions to zkSync sequencer nodes
- Sequencer batches transactions and executes them off-chain
- A prover generates a ZK proof attesting to the correctness of all state transitions
- Proof is submitted to Ethereum L1 — verified by an on-chain smart contract
- Once verified, the state is finalized on Ethereum (no fraud window needed)

ZK rollups have faster L1 finality. Optimistic rollups currently have larger ecosystems and better tooling.
ZK Token
ZK is zkSync's native governance token, distributed via airdrop to early users in 2024. It's used for protocol governance and will eventually be used in the ZK Chain ecosystem (zkSync's hyperchain scaling vision).
The initial airdrop was controversial — many heavy users felt undercompensated relative to low-activity wallets. zkSync has since committed to additional community distributions.
Hyperchains: zkSync's Scaling Vision
zkSync's long-term architecture is ZK Stack — a framework for launching custom ZK rollup chains (hyperchains) that settle proofs on Ethereum via zkSync. Each hyperchain can have custom gas tokens, governance, and rules, while inheriting L1 security via the ZK proof system.
This is analogous to Optimism's Superchain (OP Stack chains like Base, Mode, Zora) but using ZK proofs instead of optimistic rollups.

Should You Use zkSync?
For Ethereum-based DeFi users: zkSync offers faster L1 finality than optimistic rollups and genuine ZK security. The ecosystem is smaller than Arbitrum or Base but growing.
For most casual DeFi users: Base or Arbitrum have deeper liquidity and more app options. zkSync is most compelling if you specifically need fast L1 withdrawals or are building on ZK Stack.
