Linea is a ZK rollup developed by ConsenSys — the company behind MetaMask, Infura, and Truffle. Launched in 2023, it targets Ethereum developers who want ZK rollup security with minimal tooling changes.
Why ConsenSys Built Linea
ConsenSys has deep Ethereum infrastructure roots. MetaMask alone has 30M+ users. Linea is ConsenSys's L2 bet — building a chain that MetaMask users can access natively and that integrates with ConsenSys's existing developer stack.
The strategy: if MetaMask defaults to Linea for certain operations (bridging, onboarding), Linea gets distribution through the most widely used Ethereum wallet.
Linea's Technical Approach
Linea uses a custom ZK proof system called Linea's zkEVM — EVM compatible (not equivalent at the bytecode level, but functionally equivalent for almost all contracts). The prover handles standard Solidity contracts without developer modification.
Proving system: Linea uses a combination of arithmetic circuits and a lattice-based approach for post-quantum security. Technical details are less publicly documented than zkSync or Scroll, but audited by multiple firms.
Sequencer: Currently centralized (ConsenSys runs it). Decentralization roadmap is in progress — moving toward a permissionless prover and sequencer network.
Linea Ecosystem
Despite being newer than Arbitrum or Optimism, Linea attracted a meaningful DeFi ecosystem via aggressive liquidity incentive programs:
Lynex: Native ve(3,3) DEX on Linea (similar to Aerodrome/Velodrome model). The dominant DEX by volume on Linea.
Nile Exchange: Another ve(3,3) DEX competing with Lynex.
Mendi Finance: Lending protocol on Linea. Aave-style supply/borrow markets.
LineaBank: Another lending market native to Linea.
Gamma Strategies: Automated concentrated liquidity management on Linea pools.
LXP: Linea's Points System
Linea ran an extensive "LXP" (Linea Experience Points) program before launching a token. Users earned LXP for bridging to Linea, using DeFi protocols, and participating in ecosystem events.
LXP-L (Liquidity LXP) rewarded liquidity providers specifically. The accumulated LXP is expected to be used in future token distributions.
