Phantom is the dominant wallet for Solana. If you're entering Solana DeFi in 2026, this is where you start.
This guide covers setup, funding, security, and connecting to DeFi apps — everything you need to go from zero to using Solana.
Installing Phantom
Phantom is available as:
- Browser extension (Chrome, Firefox, Brave, Edge) — best for desktop DeFi
- Mobile app (iOS, Android) — best for trading on the go
For DeFi use, install the browser extension. It integrates directly with swap interfaces, lending protocols, and NFT marketplaces.
Download only from phantom.app — the official site. Fake wallet extensions are a common attack vector. Verify the URL before installing.
Creating Your Wallet
On first launch, you'll create a new wallet or import an existing one.
Create new wallet:
- Click "Create a new wallet"
- Set a password (used to unlock the extension locally)
- Write down your Secret Recovery Phrase — 12 random words
The recovery phrase is the only way to recover your wallet if you lose your device or forget your password. Write it on paper. Store it somewhere safe and offline. Do not screenshot it. Do not store it in cloud notes, email, or messaging apps.
Anyone with your recovery phrase has full access to your wallet. This is not recoverable if compromised.
Funding Your Wallet
Your Phantom address is a Solana address (starts with a letter, ~44 characters). To fund it:
From a centralized exchange (Coinbase, Kraken, Binance):
- Go to withdraw/send in your CEX
- Select SOL as the asset
- Select Solana network (not ERC-20 SOL)
- Paste your Phantom address
- Confirm — arrives in 1–3 minutes
Minimum useful amount: 0.1 SOL covers transaction fees for many interactions. 0.5–1 SOL is more comfortable if you plan to use DeFi.
SOL is used for gas fees on every Solana transaction. Even if you're only swapping USDC, you need a small SOL balance.
Connecting to Solana DeFi
Once funded, you can connect Phantom to any Solana DeFi app:
- Visit the app (e.g., SovereignSwap, Jupiter, Raydium)
- Click "Connect Wallet" in the top right
- Select "Phantom" from the wallet list
- Approve the connection in the Phantom popup
The app can now read your wallet balance and request transaction approvals. It cannot move funds without your explicit approval on each transaction.
Using SovereignSwap
SovereignSwap is a Solana DEX aggregator built on Jupiter's routing engine. It routes your swaps across all major Solana liquidity venues to find the best rate.
To swap SOL → USDC:
- Connect Phantom at sovereigntokenswap.xyz
- Select SOL as the input token
- Select USDC as the output token
- Enter the amount
- Click Swap → approve in Phantom
The swap completes in 1–3 seconds. Transaction fees are typically under $0.001.
AI Trading Signals
SovereignSwap includes an AI signal layer — market sentiment analysis for major Solana tokens. The signals tab shows bullish/bearish/neutral readings derived from on-chain data and price action.
Security Practices
Never share your seed phrase. No legitimate app, support agent, or protocol will ever ask for it.
Check URLs carefully. Bookmark the apps you use. Phishing sites that look identical to real apps are common.
Approve transactions carefully. Read what a transaction does before approving. Phantom shows a summary of what each transaction will do to your assets.
Use hardware wallets for large amounts. Ledger and Trezor integrate with Phantom for cold storage of significant holdings.
Next Steps
Once you're comfortable with basic swaps, explore:
- Liquid staking: Stake SOL via Marinade to earn ~6% APY while staying liquid
- Lending: Supply USDC on Kamino to earn lending yield
- DeFi yield: Provide liquidity on Raydium or Orca concentrated pools
