MetaMask is the most widely used wallet for Ethereum and EVM-compatible chains including Base, Arbitrum, and Optimism. In 2026, it's the default entry point for most DeFi users on these networks. Here's how to get started and use it safely.
Installing MetaMask
MetaMask is available as:
- Browser extension — Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave. Install from metamask.io (verify the URL — phishing sites mimic the real one).
- Mobile app — iOS and Android. Download from the official app stores; search "MetaMask" and verify the developer is "ConsenSys."
Never install MetaMask from a link someone sent you. Always go directly to metamask.io or the official app stores.
Creating Your Wallet
On first launch, MetaMask generates a wallet for you:
- Click "Create a new wallet"
- Set a password (this locks the browser extension — it is NOT your recovery phrase)
- You'll receive a 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase (seed phrase)
The seed phrase is the only thing that matters for long-term security. Write it on paper and store it somewhere safe. Do not:
- Screenshot it
- Type it into any website or app
- Share it with anyone — MetaMask support will never ask for it
Anyone with your seed phrase controls your wallet completely.
Adding Base Network
MetaMask defaults to Ethereum mainnet. To use Base:
- Open MetaMask → click the network dropdown (top of the extension)
- Click "Add a custom network" or search for "Base"
- MetaMask's built-in network list includes Base — select it and click "Approve"
Or add manually:
- Network Name: Base
- RPC URL: https://mainnet.base.org
- Chain ID: 8453
- Currency Symbol: ETH
- Block Explorer: https://basescan.org
After adding, switch to Base to see your Base ETH balance and tokens.
Getting ETH on Base
To use Base, you need ETH on Base for gas fees. Options:
- From Coinbase — Coinbase supports direct withdrawal to Base. This is the simplest option.
- Bridge from Ethereum — Use bridge.base.org to move ETH from Ethereum L1 to Base (takes up to 7 days via native bridge, or use Across for minutes).
- Buy directly — Some exchanges support direct purchase to Base.
Gas on Base is cheap (~$0.01–0.05 per transaction), so a small amount of ETH ($5–10 worth) covers many transactions.
Adding Tokens to MetaMask
MetaMask doesn't auto-detect all tokens. To see $SOVAI or any ERC-20:
- Go to the "Tokens" tab in MetaMask
- Click "Import tokens"
- Paste the token contract address
- MetaMask fills in symbol and decimals automatically
$SOVAI contract address is on the contracts page. Always verify contract addresses from official sources — not from Telegram or Twitter.
Using MetaMask with SovereignSwap
SovereignSwap's presale and staking contracts are on Base. To interact:
- Install MetaMask and switch to Base network
- Visit /presale or /stake
- Click "Connect Wallet" — MetaMask will prompt you to connect
- Approve the connection — this does NOT grant any spending permissions
- For transactions (buy, stake, claim), MetaMask will show you the exact transaction details before signing
Review every transaction before signing. Legitimate DeFi transactions show you the function name, token amounts, and contract address.
MetaMask Safety Checklist
- Never enter your seed phrase anywhere online
- Check the URL bar before connecting a wallet to any site
- Revoke unnecessary token approvals at revoke.cash
- Use hardware wallet (Ledger/Trezor) integration for large amounts
- Be skeptical of unexpected "airdrop" prompts or urgent "approve" requests
